AWI second eLearning module on Turas

Publication date: 23 Apr, 2025

We are delighted to launch a second eLearning module focusing on the application of the Adults with Incapacity Act (Scotland) Act 2000 (AWI). It follows on from the first module An Introduction to the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 and provides an opportunity for the workforce to further develop their knowledge on the following key areas:

  • The principles
  • Rights-based practice
  • Capacity, decision-making and consent
  • Supported decision-making
  • Substitute decision-making
  • Deprivation of liberty
  • AWI Act reform

The AWI Project is a partnership between the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland and NHS Education for Scotland. The aim of the project is for professionals across Scotland’s health, social work, and social care landscape to gain better knowledge of the AWI and to achieve better outcomes for individuals receiving care, treatment, and support.

The first eLearning module was launched in 2024. Since then, the module has been used by more than 2,500 people. Comments from people who completed the first module include:
"very informative learning which has allowed me a greater understanding of AWI"
"Found course both interesting and informative"
"Absolutely brilliant"

As part of the launch, the first module has also undergone a refresh to reflect updated practice guidance.

Suzanne McGuinness, executive director (social work) said:

“This eLearning module ‘The Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 – Module 2’, is a follow up of the first one, which was launched in 2024. It aims to further develop learners’ knowledge from the first module. The Mental Welfare Commission is committed to continuously supporting professionals by providing practical and up-to-date information, and this will translate to better outcomes for individuals receiving care, treatment, and support for their mental health.”
