The Mental Welfare Commission today welcomed the appointment of Dr Arun Chopra as executive director (medical).
Dr Chopra will take up the post in January, replacing Dr Moira Connolly, who has been interim medical director since November 2018.
Dr Chopra is an experienced consultant psychiatrist with a strong clinical background in general adult psychiatry, and an interest in medical law and ethics. He has worked in Scotland, England and New Zealand, and has published research on a range of issues, including the use of advance statements. Since January 2019 he has been employed part-time by the Commission as a consultant doctor overseeing the safeguards for medical treatment in the Mental Health Act. The Commission will shortly be recruiting his replacement in this role.
