The Mental Welfare Commission is supporting National Adult Support and Protection Day on Saturday 20 February 2021.The campaign is asking people to act if their instinct tells them something isn’t right – that someone vulnerable to being harmed is at risk.
Adults can be harmed in a range of ways, for example:
• inappropriate use of their property or finances;
• physical abuse;
• sexual exploitation;
• psychological harm.
If you think an adult is at risk of harm or something feels wrong, you’re right to get it checked out. If you’ve seen something, say something.
Sandy Riddell, chair, Mental Welfare Commission, said:
“We know that the longer term impact of lockdown has meant many vulnerable people are becoming increasingly lonely and isolated and may be less visible or have less contact with others.
We should all be aware of how some adults are harmed or abused, and we encourage people to act on their gut feeling when they see indications of harm to someone they know or come across.
All it takes is a phone call to your local council for the situation to be checked out and support given to a vulnerable adult, if needed. There may be nothing wrong, but there's no harm in making sure.”
